About contacts
What a contact is
Section titled “What a contact is”Contacts are the people at your clients. In practice, the ones that matter most are referees — the clients a legal directory will contact to verify the work you have claimed.
Why contacts matter more than they look
Section titled “Why contacts matter more than they look”Directory rankings turn on referee feedback. A submission with unreachable or unresponsive referees is a weak submission regardless of how good the work was.
Two things follow from that:
- Stale contact details cost rankings. A directory that cannot reach a referee simply drops the reference. It does not chase.
- Referees are a limited resource. Most directories cap how many you can nominate, and clients tire of being asked. Knowing who you have, at which companies, in which sectors, is what makes that allocation deliberate.
